Quilt (Square Counterpane with Leaves)

Counterpane Leaves Pillowptop

An Idea of Scale
The pattern is the Square Counterpane with Leaves that is meant to be a quilt, but will just be a pillow top in this case.
The needle size they call for (US 3) and a skein of Knit Picks Bare Superwash Merino/Nylon sock yarn.
A single square knit with fingering weight yarn and 3.25mm needles
A mockup of a finished quilt
This counterpane square is knit in rounds from the centre out using yarn and needles of your choice. The squares are then sewn, knit, or crocheted together using a technique of your choice and a border can be added.

To figure out how much yarn you'll need for your bed cover, knit one square and use it to work out how many squares you need for a bed cover of your chosen size. You can then undo it and measure how much yarn you used, or use the weight of the finished square to work it out (use a McMorran yarn balance, or the yardage on your ball band if using commercial yarn)
Pattern

Cast on 8 sts and divide them evenly over 4 double pointed needles (2 sts on each needle). You will need a 5th dpn to knit with.

The instructions for each round are written for one needle only. Repeat the instructions 4 times (once on each needle) for a complete round.
