The Purple Scarf...


Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows to 4" [10 cm] measured over Stocking st, 
using suggested needles or any size needles which will give the correct stitch gauge or tension.
Please carefully follow washing and drying instructions printed on the yarn label.

Abbreviations: K, knit; p, purl; st, stitch; sts, stitches; St st, Stocking stitch; beg, begin or beginning; dec, decrease or decreasing; inc, increase or increasing; ", inches; cm, centimeters; mm, millimeter; rem, remain or remaining; rep, repeat; rnd, round; sl, slip; tog, together; psso, pass slipped stitch over; tbl, through back loop; yo, yarn over needle; yrn, yarn forward and around needle; PM, place marker; M, marker.

Special Abbreviations:
kf&b
- Knit into front and back of next stitch.
SK2P - Slip next stitch knitwise to right needle, k2tog, then pass slipped stitch over.

Size: 9 x 32" [23 x 81 cm]

Note: Before starting scarf, wind off a 15 yd piece and set aside for the moment.

To Make: Cast on 2 sts.
Row 1: K2.
Row 2: K1, yo, k1 - 3 sts.
Row 3: K1, k1 tbl, k1.
Row 4: [K1, yo] twice, k1 - 5 sts.
Row 5: [K1, k1 tbl] twice, k1.
Row 6: K1, yo, k3, yo, k1 - 7 sts.
Row 7: K1, k1 tbl, k3, k1 tbl, k1.
Row 8: K1, yo, k5, yo, k1 - 9 sts.
Row 9: K1, k1 tbl, k5, k1 tbl, k1.
Rows 10 and 11: Knit.
Row 12: K1, yo, k7, yo, k1 - 11 sts.
Now continue to inc 2 sts as set on every 4th row following until there are 23 sts on the needle.
Knit 8 rows.
**Now form slot as follows:
Next Row: [K1, slip next st to st holder] 11 times, k1 - 12 sts on needle, 11 sts on st holder.

Working on front 12 sts, work Seed st as follows:
Row 1:
(wrong side) *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Row 2: *P1, k1; rep from * to end.
Repeat these last 2 rows 5 times more, then Row 1 once. Place these 12 sts onto st holder.
With wrong side of scarf facing, slip back 11 sts from st holder onto needle.**
Now join 15 yd piece and work ribbing as follows:
***Row 1: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end.
Row 2: P1, *k1, p1; rep from * to end.
Repeat these last 2 rows 5 times more, then Row 1 once. Break yarn.
Slip these sts onto a spare needle.
Slip front 12 sts back onto needle, with working yarn at point of left needle.***

Now join the 2 pieces tog as follows:
Next Row: (right side) *[K1, k1 from spare needle] twice, [insert needle through one st from front needle and one st from spare needle and k2tog] twice;
rep from * once more, [k1, k1 from spare needle] twice, insert needle through one st from front needle and one st from spare needle and k2tog, k1 - 18 sts.

Materials:  Mary Maxim Worsted Weight Yarn 1 skein
Suggested Needles:  Size 8 US, (Canadian size 6, Metric size 5.00 mm)

Next Row: Knit.
Now work in pattern as follows:
Row 1:
Yo, k2tog, yo, k7, yo, k2tog, k1, PM, k1, kf&b, k to end - 20 sts.
Row 2: K to M, sl M, k 11, yrn, p2tog - 20 sts.
Row 3: (short row) Yo, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k5, yo, k2tog, k1, turn leaving rem sts unworked.
Row 4: K 10, [yrn, p2tog] twice.
Row 5: Yo, [k2tog, yo] twice, k1, yo, k2tog, k4, yo, k2tog, k1, sl M, k1, kf&b, k to end - 23 sts.
Row 6: K to M, sl M, k9, [yrn, p2tog] 3 times - 23 sts.
Row 7: Yo, [k2tog, yo] 3 times, k1, yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k2tog, k1, sl M, k to end - 24 sts.
Row 8: K to M, sl M, k8, [yrn, p2tog] 4 times - 24 sts.
Row 9: Yo, [k2tog, yo] 4 times, k1, yo, k2tog, k2, yo, k2tog, k1, sl M, k1, kf&b, k to end - 26 sts.
Row 10: K to M, sl M, k7, [yrn, p2tog] 5 times - 26 sts.

Row 12: K6, [yrn, p2tog] 6 times.

Row 14: K to M, sl M, k5, [yrn, p2tog] 7 times.

Row 16: K to M, sl M, k5, p2tog, [yrn, p2tog] 6 times - 28 sts.

Row 18: K to M, sl M, k6, SK2P, [yrn, p2tog] 5 times - 28 sts.

Row 22: K to M, sl M, k8, SK2P, [yrn, p2tog] 3 times - 27 sts.

Row 24: K to M, sl M, k9, SK2P, [yrn, p2tog] twice - 25 sts.
Row 25: [Yo, k2tog] twice, k1, yo, k6, yo, k2tog, k1, sl M, k1, kf&b, k to end - 28 sts.
Row 26: K to M, sl M, k 10, SK2P, yrn, p2tog - 26 sts.
Row 27: (short row) Yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k7, yo, k2tog, k1, turn leaving rem sts unworked.
Row 28: K 11, SK2P - 25 sts on needle.
Repeat these 28 rows once more - 33 sts on needle at end of Row 28 (12 sts of lace pattern on one side of M and 21 sts of Garter st on other side of M).
Now rep Rows 1-28 of pattern, but omitting all increases made over Garter st after the M (will rem as 21 sts), and on those indicated as short rows, Do Not turn, but sl M and k to end.
On following row, k to M, sl M then pattern to end as given.
Now rep Rows 1-28 twice, but in place of kf&b, work k2tog and work short rows as indicated.
At end of last rep of Row 28 there should be 18 sts rem on needle.  Knit 2 rows.
Next Row: [K2, kf&b] 5 times, k3 - 23 sts.
Next Row: Knit.  Now rep from ** to ** for slot.
Now join remainder of the 15 yd piece and work complete as given from *** to ***

Now join the 2 pieces tog as follows:
Next Row: (right side) *[K1, k1 from spare needle] 11 times, k1 - 23 sts.  Knit 9 rows.
Next Row: K1, sl 1, k1, psso, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.  Knit 3 rows.
Repeat these last 4 rows until 9 sts rem.
Now dec one st at each end of the next row, then every alternate row following until 3 sts rem.
Next Row: Sl 1, k2tog, psso.
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
