Poem by Reeva Steenkamp
Perfumed lilies fumigate the air
And place bees into trances,
Buzzing, buzzing all dazed in the heat
Performing their dances.
I feel faint then cool and then faint
Again… the fountains roar but now
Flow silently in ripples towards
The embankment flow.
Creeping insects devour the leaf…
Slowly, slowly, inch by inch, they near;
Only sounds that are soft are heard,
Trying to tell us – but we do not hear.
I sit and think, the willow holding me
and watch the breezes give life and take
There in my garden, I can see
Each life is at stake.
