A Pawsome Pooch Parka!!!


Parade your pooch in style!  Knit up this quick and easy Parka for those cool evening walks, or just to provide some pampering for your pet, even dogs love to have style.

Knitting Loom:  Knifty Knitter Blue Loom (large gauge with at least 24 pegs).

Yarn: worsted-weight yarn-MC [104 yds. (94 m) Lion Brand Cotton Case 1 3/4  oz (50 g), 50% cotton, 50% acrylic in Lime] Bulky-weight yarn for trim, CC (36 yds. (33 m) Patons Pooch, 2.4 oz (70 g), 63% acrylic, 27% wool, 10% nylon in Teal Leaves].

Loom Knitting Tools

Notions: 

  • Looming tool 
  • J-10 (6 rnm) Crochet hook 
  • Tapestry needle 
  • Row counter 
  • Large coordinating button

Size:  Created for an extra small pooch.  
Measure your dog around the chest, and the length of body from base of neck to 3 in. (7.5 cm) from base of tail, and use the gauge to determine how the sts and rows will need to be adjusted. A shift up in the loom size may also be needed.

Gauge: 16 sts and 11 rows to 4 in. (10 cm).

Single rib:
R1: *K1, pl; rep from *to the end. 

Next rows: Knit the knit sts, purl the purled sts.

DIRECTIONS: 
CO 24 sts, join into the round. 
Rnds 1-15: Work in single rib st. 
Body Row 16-20: CO holding 2 strands of your MC yarn. DS in the round. Do not cut yarn. 
Row 21: CO your CC yarn and SS pegs 1-5.

*Note: this first row will be KO 2 loops over 1. Twist the MC around the CC by moving the MC over the top of the CC and all the way around. DS pegs 6-24 using MC. 

Row 22: Twist with CC on top and around, SS pegs 4-8. 

*Note: you will be skipping pegs 1-3 for now. Twist MC over the top of the CC and around and DS pegs 9-22.  Twist CC over top and SS pegs 23-3.

Row 23: Move the loop from peg 2 to peg 3 and KO. Move this loop back to peg 2. Move the loop from peg 5 to peg 4 and KO. Move this loop back to peg 5. Pegs 3 and 4 will be empty. Twist CC over top and SS on pegs 5-8.  Twist MC over top and DS pegs 9-22. Twist CC over top and SS pegs 23-2. 
Rows 24-53: (Knitted flat) Work in patt
Rows 54-59: SS using MC rem Pegs. BO with basic BO method. 
Strap Working on the outside of your jacket, find the 5 sts that mark approx, the back two-thirds of the MC portion, right before the CC. Place the "leg" of the sts closest to the CC up onto 5 pegs through the inside of your loom. 
Rows 1-52: CO 2 strands of MC and DS 52 rows. 

*Note: this strap will go around your dog's rib cage. Measure your dog, measure your finished jacket in width, and add 5 in. (12.5 cm)to find your strap length. 

Row 53: Move the loop on peg #3 to peg #2 and KO. DS all pegs, except peg #3, which is now empty. Just carry the WY behind the peg and continue on.
Row 54: DS all 5 pegs. Peg #3 will only have one loop, and so will not be KO.
Row 55: Wrap all pegs loosely and KO 2 loops over 1 (peg 3 will be 1 over 1). BO with basic BO method.
Whipstitch around the place where you decreased peg 3. This will be your button hole.
Sew the button to the other side of the jacket, 1 in. (2.5 cm) up from the CC edge.
Weave in ends, and trim.
