A basic knowledge of crochet and crochet terms is a must to work this pattern.
Materials:
Bernat Baby Softee [yarn used in pattern sample], approximately 6 ounces
F crochet hook, or hook to match gauge [for body]
E crochet hook [for ribbing]
Scissors
Large eye needle
Scrap yarn for marking rows
Optional: Ribbon for tie
Baby sew-on patch or decorative button

Note: ch 1, turn at end of each row unless otherwise stated. Work all ends into row as you work, or weave them in when finished.
Stitches used:
single crochet [sc]
Slip stitch [sl st]
Seed stitch [also known as upside down stitch] - sc in first ch, double crochet in next ch, work across chain. Ch 1, turn. Work sc in top of double crochet of previous row, work double crochet in top of sc of previous row, etc. To dec in seed stitch – ch, turn from previous row; skip first st on previous row, and keeping to pattern, work across row to last 2 sts; skip st, work pattern st in last st, ch 1, turn.
Treble stitch [trbl]
Bodice back
Ch 46
R1. Sc in second ch from hook, and ea. sc across.
Work 13 rows sc, repeating r1. Row 3 is front of garment
Mark ea. end of last row for armhole.
Repeat row 1 to 4”. 38 rows total.
Mark row 3 as right side of bodice.
Skirt back
Mark row one of skirt as right side of gown.
R1. Attach yarn with sc in first free loop on starting ch. Work seed stitch across. Work seed stitch for 15”, a total of 64 rows.
Hem
R1. Sc across.
R2. Sc across.
R3. Sc in first 3 sc, ch 1, skip sc, sc in next 3 sc across, ending with ch 1, sk sc, sc in last sc.
R4. Sc in ea. sc and ch of previous row. End off.
Holes in row 3 are for tie [crocheted or ribbon].
Bodice front.
Repeat rows 1 to 24 as for back.
Shape neck
R25. Work sc in first 17 sts. Ch 1, turn, do not work remaining sts on row.
R26. Dec 1 st at neck edge, sc across.
R27. Work across, dec 1 st at neck edge.
R28. Repeat row 26.
R29. Repeat row 27.
R30. Repeat row 26.
R31. Repeat row 27. [11 sts remaining on row]
Work even on 11 sts to 4” from armhole [total of 38 rows]. End off.
To shape other side of neck
Skip 11 sc on row 25, attach yarn with sc in next st, work across row [17 sc].
Repeat rows as on other side, reversing the shaping. End off.
Skirt front.
Repeat all rows as for back.
Sew shoulder seams.
Sleeves – work both the same.
With right side facing, working in seed stitch, attach yarn with sc at marked row on bodice, and work across opening to other marked stitch. Ch 1, turn. Work even.
Dec rows 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23.
Work row 24 even. Do not end off.
Change to E hook, and ch 5. Sc in second ch from hook, sc across last 3 ch, sl st in next st on row 24 of sleeve, sl st in next st, turn. Skip both sl sts, single crochet in back loops only across 4 sc.
Repeat across for ribbing: ch 1, turn. Sc in back loops only across 4 sc, sl st in ea. of next 2 sts on row 24, turn. Sc in back loops only across 4 sc. And end of ribbing rows, end off.
Sew side seams and sleeve seams, turn right side out.
Neckline – F hook
Collar – attach yarn with sc at one shoulder seam. Sc around opening, evenly spacing 62 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. Ch 1. DO NOT TURN.
Ch 3, work 3 trbl in ea sc around, join with sl st in top of starting ch 3. End off.
Tie – E hook
Ch 76, sl st in second ch from hook. Sl st in remaining ch to end. Tie off. Weave through holes in row 3 of hem, tie in front.
