A Sweater for Dad...


MATERIALS: 
  • Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Sweater & Afghan Yarn (2 oz skein), 6(6-7-7-7) Green (A), 1 (1-1-2-2-) White (B).
  • "Boye" crochet hook Size G and Size J or size to give gauge

Gauge (J Hook): 7 sts to 2"; 4 rows to 1"
Finished Measurements: Chest: 36(38-40-42-44)"

Back: With J hook and B ch 64(68-71-75-78) to measure approx 18(19-20-21-22)"
THE KNIT STITCH
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end - 63(67-70-74-77) sc. Ch 1, turn at end of every row. 
Row 2: Insert hook in sp between the 2 strands of first sc of row below (not under loops at top of sc), work 1 sc (sc worked in center of sc), continue to work sc in center of each sc to end. Rep Row 2 for Pat. 
Row 3: Work to: last 2 lps of last sc, work off last 2 lps with A (always change colors in this way. Cut color not in use). [Work 11 rows A, 3 rows B] twice. Remainder of back is worked with A. Work even to 12½" from beg, or desired length to underarm, allowing for a 3" rib band at lower edge.

Armholes: Sl st in each of 4(4-5-5-6) sts, do not work in last 4(4-5-5-6) sts. Ch, 1, turn. Dec 1 st each side of next 4(5-5-6-6) rows. Work on 47(49-50-52-53) sts until armholes measure 9(9-9½-9½-10)".
Shoulders: SI st in each of 4(4-4-5-5) sts at beg of next 4 rows, 5(6-6-5-5) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Work 1 row on 21(21-22-22-22) sts for back of neck. Fasten off.

Front: Work same as back to 1 row less than back to armholes. Divide for fronts, as follows: Work 31(33-35-37-38) sts, ch 1 turn.

Armhole and Neck: Work to armhole edge. 
Next Row: Sl st in each of 4(4-5-5-6) sts, work to last 2 sts, dec 1 st. Dec 1 st at armhole edge every row 4(5-5-6-6) times, AND AT SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge every 2nd row 4(4-5-5-4) times, every 4th row 6(6-6-6-7) times, shaping shoulder as on back when armhole is same length.

Sizes 36, 38 & 44 Only: 
Sk center st of last complete row. Join yarn in next st. 
Sizes 40 & 42: Join yarn in next st of last complete row. Work second side to correspond to first side.

Lower Rib Border: With G hook and A, ch 15 to measure approx 3". 
Row 1 (right side): Thru top lp only sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end (14 sc). Ch 1, turn at end of every row. 
Row 2: Thru back lp only sc in each sc. Rep Row 2 until there are 38(40-42-44-46) ribs. Sew foundation ch to top of last row to form circle.
Armhole Bands: With G hook and A, ch 6. Work same as lower band until there are 35(37-39-41-43) ribs. Sew into circle.
Finishing: Sew underarm and shoulder seams. With lower band seam at right side seam, overcast 1 edge of ribs to lower edge of body. With armband seams at underarm seams, sew bonds to armholes.

Neckband: With G hook join A at top of left shoulder seam. 
Rnd 1: From right side, work sc in each row of left neck edge to center front, 1 sc at center front (mark this st), same number of sc on right neck edge as on left, sc in each st at back of neck. Join with sl st to first sc, draw B thru lp on hook. 
Rnd 2: Draw up a lp in last sc worked and in next sc, yo and thru 3 lps on hook (1 st dec), sc in each st to within 2 sts of marked st, draw up a lp in each of next 2 sts, yo and thru 3 lps on hook, sc in marked st, dec 1 st, sc to within 2 sts of back of neck, dec 1 st, sc to end. Join. Draw A thru lp. 
Rnds 3-5: Rep Rnd 2. Draw B thru lp. Rep Rnd 2 working 3 sts tog at sides of back of neck and at center front. 
Join and fasten off.
