Crochet a Wrought Iron Flower Holder....

Flower Holder

Materials:

  • LILY DOUBLE QUICK, Art. 50, in Black: 1 skein.
  • No. 3 Steel Crochet Hook.
  • 32 inches black millinery wire or other stiff wire. Smallest size baking pan - 3 ¾ x 7 ¾ x 2 ¼ inches.
BOTTOM: Repeat Bottom of Casserole Cover to *. Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in 1st sc, sc around with 3 sc in each corner, having number of sc on each side (corner sc to corner sc incl) divisible by 5 plus 1; end with 1 sc in 1st corner, join to back lp of 1st sc.

CASSEROLE COVER:
BOTTOM: Starting at long side, make a chain slightly longer than bottom of dish.
ROW 1: Sc in 2d ch from hook, sc in each ch across until row measures length of dish. Cut and rip excess chain.
ROW 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Repeat Row 2 until piece is same width as bottom of dish. Now, working around outer edges, sc closely around, having number of sc divisible by 3. Join with sl st to 1st sc.

SIDE PIECE: 

RND 1: Ch 3, dc in next sc, dc back in sc previous to ch-3, * sk 1 sc, dc in next 2 sc, dc back in skipped sc (cross st group made); repeat from * around; join to ch-3.
RND 2: Ch 3, dc in next dc, dc back in last dc of previous group, * sk 1 dc, dc in 1st 2 dc of next group, dc back in skipped dc; repeat from * around; join. Repeat Rnd 2 until piece is ¼ inch shorter than depth at dish.

Edge:

RND 1: Ch 3, turn and working in back lp only, dc in each dc around; join.
RND 2: Ch 1, turn, insert hook thru back lp of sl st and down at back thru remaining lp of dc at base of ch-3, Y 0 and draw thru 2 lps, Y 0 and draw thru 2 lps (sc made); * sc thru back lp of next dc and down at back thru remaining lp of do in previous rnd; repeat from * around, drawing sc down firmly to puff out dc-rnd into a ridge. Join and fasten off.
Starch Cover, mold over dish and leave until dry.


TOP: 

RND 1: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in back lp of each sc around; join.
RND 2: Work in both lps. Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next sc, (ch 5, sk 2 sc, sc in next 3 sc) repeated around; end with 1 sc, join to 1st sc.
RND 3: Ch 7, * (sc in 2d, 3d & 4th sts of next ch-5 lp, ch 5) repeated across; ch 3, tr in center sc of 3 corner sc, ch 3 and repeat from * around; end with ch 3, join to 4th st of ch-7.
RND 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next ch, * (ch 5, sc in 3 center sts of next ch-5) repeated across; ch 5, sc in 3d st of ch-3, sc in tr, sc in next ch; repeat from * around; end with 1 sc, join to 1st sc. Repeat Rnds 3 & 4 twice.
RND 9: Repeat Rnd 3 but with ch-3 lps instead of ch-5.
RND 10: Ch 1, sc in each sc and tr around, 3 sc in each sp; join.
RND 11: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join.
RND 12: Ch 1, sc at base of each sc around; join and fasten off.

Cut wire into four 8-inch pieces. Wrap ends with gummed tape.

CROCHETED ROPE: 

Ch 2, 5 sc in 2d ch from hook. Cup sc, tight-side-inside and working in back lp, sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc around and around for ½ inch, push end of 1 wire into it and continue making Rope around outside of wire until it is covered, always with 5 sc in a rnd. Close with sl sts. Fasten off. Bend 3 ¾ inches of one end and 1 ¾ inches of other end, into tight coils. Sew straight piece (between coils) up one corner with large coil extending ½ inch below bottom of Holder. Repeat on each corner.

Starch, blocking over pan. Lace string across top to pull sides up taut. Leave until dry.
